Do you have a reliable back up for your files?

by jododds on December 29 2008

I have been meaning to post about this for ages and every time I meet my friend, Graham West, from www.grahamwestharpist.co.uk he reminds me that I need to do this; so here I am using the quiet time between Christmas and New Year to finally get it done!

Over the years I have used various back up services to ensure that I don’t lose my important PC files and I have to say that on at least two scary occasions I had to use my back ups so I can’t stress enough how important it is to get a great back up programme in place, especially if you are running a business.  Over the years I have used an online service, that was great but really expensive as with a lot of graphic files I have need a hefty amount of back up space.  More recently I’ve been using a separate hard drive connected to my computer, but that would obviously not be much use if my office burnt down – added to which, I was doing a manual back up every day, which was a complete pain!

I was recently introduced to an online service that has revolutionised my back ups and all for a fixed annual price per computer of $49.95 regardless of how much you need to back up.  I’ve been using it for a few months now and I think it’s brilliant.  You can get a free trial for 15 days and it initially took the whole 15 days for all my files to be backed up, but they are consistently updated all the time in the background now, so I have complete peace of mind.  In fact, we were away for Christmas and Carbonite emailed me to ask if everything was ok as my back up hadn’t been updated for over a week (as my PC was switched off), which I think is a great service in case there is a problem in the future that I’m not aware of.
